About Saxenda

Saxenda, known scientifically as Liraglutide, is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist which is injected once daily. It functions similarly to the GLP-1 hormone that regulates appetite in our body. When injected, Saxenda slows down gastric emptying, which in turn increases feelings of fullness and satiety, lowering the urge to eat large quantities or snack frequently.

One of the unique aspects of Saxenda that sets it apart from other weight management products is its dual action. Not only does it help to reduce appetite and food consumption, but it also works at the cellular level, helping your body to regulate blood sugars and prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes – a common risk factor associated with obesity.

As with any medication, the results vary from individual to individual, but when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise, Saxenda can significantly help in weight loss and management. As such, Saxenda stands as a prominent and efficient aid in the battle against obesity and its associated health risks.

How Saxenda Works

Saxenda Composition and Functioning

Saxenda’s active ingredient is Liraglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which plays a crucial role in weight management. This protein compound, synthetically produced but comparable to the natural hormone found in the body, interacts with the GLP-1 receptors in the brain to manage appetite.

Saxenda functions by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which is usually released into the bloodstream after you eat. This hormone sends signals to your brain to make you feel satisfied and full, thereby reducing your calorie intake. The medication slows gastric emptying and increases feelings of fullness and satiety. This leads to a reduced urge to eat, helping those struggling with weight management to control their portion sizes and resist the temptation of unnecessary snacking.

What sets Saxenda apart from other weight management products is its dual action. While many weight loss products focus solely on appetite suppression, Saxenda goes a step further. It not only reduces appetite but also works at a cellular level, helping your body regulate blood sugars, and thus preventing the onset of type-2 diabetes – a common risk factor associated with obesity.

By offering both appetite regulation and blood sugar management, Saxenda stands out as an efficient aid in the fight against obesity and its associated health risks.

Usage Instructions

Dosage and Administration

Saxenda is administered as a once-daily subcutaneous injection. It’s recommended to inject it in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. The starting dose is 0.6 mg per day for the first week. This allows your body to adjust to the medication and minimises gastrointestinal side effects. From the second week onwards, the dose should be increased by 0.6 mg each week until the full maintenance dose of 3.0 mg is reached by week five.

It’s important to note that if you can’t tolerate the increased dose, it can be lowered. However, if the lower dose is also not well tolerated, you should stop taking Saxenda. Do not take more Saxenda than prescribed.

Storage and Handling

Saxenda should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze. After first use, you can keep it at room temperature or in a refrigerator for up to 30 days. Do not use Saxenda if it has been frozen. Always keep the pen cap on when not in use to protect from light. Dispose of the pen 30 days after first use, even if some medicine is left in the pen.

Keep Saxenda out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the label and carton after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

Always remember to consult your healthcare provider if you have any doubts or questions about the usage, dosage, or storage of Saxenda.

Suitability and Precautions

Who Should Use Saxenda

Saxenda is typically prescribed for adults who are obese or overweight. Specifically, it is suitable for those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above, or for those with a BMI of 27 or above alongside a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. BMI is a calculation that takes into consideration an individual’s weight and height.

While Saxenda can be a beneficial aid in the battle against obesity, it’s important to consider certain health conditions and medications that may interact with Saxenda. Individuals with a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney disease, or depression should disclose these to their healthcare provider before starting Saxenda. Moreover, people on insulin or other medications for diabetes need to monitor their blood sugar levels closely while on Saxenda, as it can impact the body’s glucose regulation.

Consult a Healthcare Professional

It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new medication, including Saxenda. Your healthcare provider can conduct a thorough medical evaluation to assess your eligibility for Saxenda, considering your BMI, health history, and any current medications. Furthermore, the decision to start Saxenda should be taken in context with a broader weight management program that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and behaviour changes. Remember, Saxenda is not a standalone solution but a part of a comprehensive weight management strategy.

Side Effects and Risks

Side Effects of Saxenda

Like all medications, Saxenda comes with potential side effects that may vary in intensity and frequency among individuals. It’s important to be aware of these potential side effects and know how to manage them and when to seek medical help.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects of Saxenda include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, headache, decreased appetite, dyspepsia (indigestion), fatigue, dizziness, abdominal pain, and increased lipase (enzyme). Many of these side effects wane over time as your body adjusts to the medication.

Less Common Side Effects

Less common, but potentially severe side effects include pancreatitis, gall bladder disorders, renal impairment, suicidal behaviour, increased heart rate, and allergic reactions.

Managing Side Effects

Most side effects are manageable and may diminish over time as your body adjusts to Saxenda. Drinking plenty of water, eating a balanced diet, and getting regular exercise can help manage many of these side effects. If you’re experiencing nausea, it may help to take Saxenda with a meal or snack.

Seeking Medical Help

If you experience severe or persistent side effects, or if you suspect you’re having an allergic reaction to Saxenda (symptoms may include difficulty breathing, rash, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), seek immediate medical attention.

Long-Term Safety

Saxenda has been proven safe for long-term use in clinical trials. However, as with any medication, it is important to continue regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider while taking Saxenda. They can monitor your progress, manage side effects, and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan. Always remember to not take Saxenda for longer than prescribed, and do not increase your dose without consulting your healthcare provider.

It’s important to remember that Saxenda is a part of a comprehensive weight management programme and should be used in conjunction with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and behavioral changes for optimal long-term results.
